“As long as justice is postponed we always stand on the verge of these darker nights of social disruption.” - so said Martin Luther King Jr. in a speech on March 14, 1968, just three weeks before he was assassinated.

Edward Snowden: “I don’t want to live in a society that does these sort of things… I do not want to live in a world where everything I do and say is recorded.”

"SANCTUARY" to host talks by

Two well-known voices of resistance will bring their messages to The Sanctuary for Independent Media later this month.

World-renowned cyberactivist and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is scheduled to speak Sunday, May 15, during what the group is billing as a “super secret, VIP brunch” at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, Democracy Now! founder Amy Goodman will be the featured guest at a dinner Saturday, May 21, to benefit the sanctuary’s latest effort, a community radio station, WOOC (105.3 FM), that went on the air in January.

Assange will address the group from the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where he has remained since seeking asylum in 2012 to prevent the United States from extraditing him to face criminal charges for publishing classified or sensitive military and diplomatic documents provided by U.S. soldier Bradley Manning. Assange is expected to discuss his latest efforts to liberate information in the public interest.

His appearance will be introduced by Mike Bonanno of the Yes Men, an international network of so-called culture-jamming activist who create and maintain fake websites to raise awareness about social and political issues. Bonanno will also show an exclusive, never-before-seen film from the time the Yes Men learned from Assange they were being spied on by Stratfor, a multinational strategic intelligence company, and went on to help release 5 million emails liberated from the company by hackers affiliated with the international group Anonymous.

The brunch is scheduled for 11 a.m., with Assange to speak at 1 p.m. At the end of the event, a delegation from the sanctuary will march to downtown Albany to join in a blockade of oil trains as part of a protest against fossil fuels. Tickets for the brunch are $75, while admission to Assange’s talk only is $15.

Goodman, meanwhile, is the creator of Democracy Now!, an international, independent, daily news hour she hosts with award-winning journalist Juan Gonzalez. The program uses voices often ignored by traditional media to present in-depth information, historical perspective and substantive debate on the day’s pressing issues.

Debuting in 1996, Democracy Now! is now the largest public media collaboration in the U.S., broadcasting on more than 1,400 public television and radio stations around the world, including local noncommercial radio stations WRPI (91.5 FM) at 9 a.m. weekdays and WOOC at 3 and 5 p.m. weekdays, as well as online at www.democracynow.org.

Dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with Goodman expected to speak at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the dinner at $105.30, while admission to Goodman’s talk is a suggested $10 donation, $5 for students or low-income people.

The Sanctuary for Independent Media is a community media arts center located in an historic former church at 3361 6th Ave. in North Troy. The center offers screening, production and performance facilities, training in media production and a meeting space for artists, activists and independent media makers of all kinds.

Tickets for both events are available at www.brownpapertickets.com. For more information on the organization or either event, visit www.mediasanctuary.org or call 272-2390.
