The 40-year-old was jailed for five years and four months at Southwark Crown Court.
He is employed in the Met's sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command.
Maitland was originally arrested on 22 November last year on suspicion of possession and distribution of indecent images of children.
He was re-arrested on 15 March on suspicion of sexual touching, and later charged.
Scotland Yard said he was off duty at the time of the offences and is currently suspended.
When he pleaded guilty, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith referred to the material on his computer as "pretty gruesome".

It is alleged the officer had 818 indecent images and videos, ranging from the most serious category A to the lowest category C.
'Gruesome'Maitland, of Widey View, Plymouth, was originally arrested in November 2015 on suspicion of possession and distribution of indecent images of children and then re-arrested in March on suspicion of sexual touching after the offences were discovered to have been captured on film.
Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith sitting at Southwark Crown Court said all sentencing options remain open and ordered a pre-sentence report.
"The sexual assault was one in which the complainant was unaware," he said.
He added: "However, the material on the computer was pretty gruesome so unusually I can't give an indication I am afraid - all options are open."
He will sentenced on 13 May.
Detective Constable Christopher Maitland pleaded guilty at London's Southwark Crown Court to two counts of sexually touching a child under the age of 13 on or around 6 June 2005.
The 40-year-old, who works in the Metropolitan Police's sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command, is currently suspended from duty.
Wearing a grey jumper and standing with his hands clasped and head bowed, Maitland spoke only to plead guilty to both charges.
He had pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates' Court in March to five charges of taking and seven charges of making indecent images of a child.
He will be sentenced for a total of 14 sexual offences on 13 May at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith said.
